Activities
____Activities
are a needed and valued part of a student's experience
in school. Activities at AHSS are both curricular
and extracurricular. The various academic subjects
are each assigned a month from the school calendar.
During the month assigned for Arabic language
for example, the Arabic language teachers busy
themselves and their students with poetry and
composition writing, performances of plays, traditional
dances, etc
The school walls are decorated
with student work and academic projects. Similar
activity can be seen for all major academic subjects
throughout the year. Competitions are also often
held between the classes during mathematics month.
____Other
curricular activities include class field trips
to museums, factories, newspaper offices, orphanages,
and national heritage sites.
____AHSS
always participates in Ministry of Education sports
tournaments as well as participating in and often
sponsoring friendly matches and tournaments with
neighboring private schools of greater Amman.
Our students are primarily active in soccer, basketball,
volleyball, table tennis, and track and field
events.
Clubs
A
chess club was started in the spring
of 2002. Members met on a weekly basis. Plans
for the coming year include hosting a multi-school
competition and building closer ties with The
Royal Jordanian Chess Federation.
AHSS
is always keen to help promote environmental awareness
in the community. The school's environment club
is not yet a clearly identified entity although
AHSS staff and students have always participated
in community clean-ups, recycling campaigns, water
conservation awareness, and walks to raise money
for wildlife. The school is a member of the Royal
Society for the Conservation of Nature and as
a consequence is helping to protect endangered
animal and plant species in the kingdom. The school
also regularly participates in workshops for schools
with environmental clubs. Plans for the coming
year are to set goals and guidelines for the club
as well as to involve students as active members.
A Young Travelers' Club was established in 1989 and combines fun with on-site
learning for members in grades 1-7. Fall and spring,
weather permitting, are high seasons for the YTC
with parents often volunteering to chaperone trips.
Trips are scheduled on days off and Jordan's archaeological
treasures are among the most frequent destinations.
Club members also visit museums, nature reserves,
factories and national monuments. Sports and exercise
opportunities abound, from soccer to hiking, swimming,
and overnight camping. The YTC activities promote
learning about Jordan's history and geography,
as well as concern for the environment. Even more
important, they provide the setting for developing
group spirit, teamwork, and positive human values.
